Agafay Desert Weather: Climate and Temperatures Month by Month

Before booking your excursion to the Agafay Desert, you probably want to know what the weather will be like. It is an important question, especially if you are planning an outdoor activity like quad biking or a bivouac night. Good news: the Agafay climate is generally mild year-round, but each season has its own characteristics. Here is the month-by-month breakdown.

The General Climate of the Agafay Desert

The Agafay Desert enjoys a semi-arid climate, typical of the Moroccan Atlas foothills. The main characteristics are:

More than 300 days of sunshine per year
— Hot, dry summers
— Mild winters during the day, cool at night
— Very little rainfall (approximately 250 mm/year)
— A significant temperature difference between day and night

The proximity of the High Atlas influences the climate: descending winds can cool winter nights and mornings, while in summer the mountain mass amplifies daytime heat.

Spring (March to May): The Ideal Period

March: temperatures range between 12°C at night and 24°C during the day. This is the start of the ideal season. Mornings are cool but afternoons are pleasant. Some showers are possible at the beginning of the month.

April: between 14°C and 27°C. The perfect month. The sky is almost always clear, temperatures are mild and the light is magnificent. It is the peak tourist season for good reason.

May: between 17°C and 31°C. The heat begins to rise but remains very bearable. Evenings are particularly pleasant. This is the last "ideal" month before summer.

Spring is perfect for all activities: quad ride, quad and camel combo, hiking or bivouac.

Summer (June to August): Heat and Morning Excursions

June: between 20°C and 35°C. The heat sets in firmly. Morning excursions (before 11am) and late afternoon (after 4pm) are preferred.

July: between 23°C and 38°C. The hottest month. Outdoor activities are reserved for early morning or sunset time slots. The advantage: very few tourists and often lower prices.

August: between 22°C and 37°C. Similar to July, with occasional storms at the end of the month that temporarily cool the atmosphere.

Summer tip: stay well hydrated, wear a hat and sunscreen. Sunset excursions are particularly recommended during this period — the golden light on the desert is spectacular.

Autumn (September to November): The Return of Mild Weather

September: between 20°C and 33°C. The heat begins to fade. It is the gradual return to ideal conditions. Evenings become cool and pleasant again.

October: between 16°C and 28°C. One of the best months to visit. Temperatures are perfect, the sky is clear and the autumn light gives the desert sublime golden tones.

November: between 12°C and 23°C. Days remain sunny and pleasant, but nights cool down noticeably. Bring a jacket for late afternoon excursions.

Autumn is the second-best season after spring. For more details on choosing the right time, read our article on the best seasons for quad biking in Agafay.

Winter (December to February): Mild Days, Cool Nights

December: between 7°C and 19°C. Days remain sunny and mild, but mornings and nights are cool. Plan to layer your clothing.

January: between 5°C and 18°C. The coldest month, especially at night. During the day, the sun warms things up quickly and conditions are very pleasant for quad biking or hiking. It is also the rainiest month, but with only 3 to 5 rainy days on average.

February: between 7°C and 20°C. The beginning of renewal. Temperatures gradually rise and the almond trees in bloom in the surrounding area offer a magnificent spectacle.

Winter tip: days are short (sunset around 5:30pm). Schedule your activities for midday to enjoy the best conditions. For a bivouac, make sure the camp provides warm blankets.

What to Wear According to the Season?

Spring/Autumn: light clothing, a light jacket for morning and evening, closed-toe shoes, sunglasses, sunscreen.

Summer: very light and breathable clothing, hat mandatory, plenty of water, SPF 50 sunscreen.

Winter: layerable clothing, warm jacket for morning and evening, scarf or foulard. During the day, a simple jumper is often enough.
