"Where exactly is Agafay?" — that is the question we get asked most often. And it makes sense: when you think "desert in Morocco", you immediately picture the great Sahara dunes, hours away from everything. The Agafay Desert is an entirely different story. Here is everything you need to know about its location.
Geographic Location of the Agafay Desert
The Agafay Desert is located in the Marrakech-Safi region, in central Morocco. More specifically, it occupies an arid plateau south-west of the city of Marrakech, nestled between the Haouz plain and the foothills of the High Atlas.
Its approximate GPS coordinates are: 31.4° N, 8.2° W. The centre of the desert is about 30 km from Jemaa el-Fna square in Marrakech, making it one of the most accessible deserts in the world from a major tourist city.
The Agafay Desert spans an area of approximately 200 km². It is bordered to the north by the road linking Marrakech to Amizmiz, to the east by the first outskirts of Marrakech, to the south by the slopes of the Atlas and to the west by the lake of the Lalla Takerkoust dam.
How Far from Marrakech?
This is where the Agafay Desert scores a major point over the Sahara. Here are the distances from key landmarks in Marrakech:
From the Medina (Jemaa el-Fna): about 30 km — 35 to 45 minutes by car.
From Marrakech-Menara Airport: about 35 km — 40 to 50 minutes.
From the Gueliz district: about 28 km — 30 to 40 minutes.

A Landscape Between Desert and Mountain
What makes the Agafay Desert's location so unique is its position at the crossroads of two worlds. On one side, the semi-arid plain with its rocky soils and barren hills that evoke a lunar landscape. On the other, the High Atlas range rising to over 4,000 metres with Jebel Toubkal, the highest peak in North Africa.
This proximity to the Atlas offers exceptional panoramas. In clear weather (which is frequent), you can clearly see the snow-capped peaks from the desert. It is this backdrop that makes quad rides in the Agafay Desert so photogenic.
Surroundings of the Agafay Desert
The Agafay Desert is not isolated. Several points of interest are located nearby:
Lake Lalla Takerkoust — On the western edge of the desert, this artificial lake formed by a dam offers a striking contrast with the arid landscape. Some excursions combine desert and lake.
The Kik Plateau — South of the desert, this plateau offers spectacular hikes with sweeping views over the valley.
Amizmiz — This small Berber village at the foot of the Atlas is known for its Tuesday souk and authentic atmosphere.
The Ourika Valley — About 45 minutes from Agafay, this green Atlas valley is the perfect complement for those wanting to see another side of Morocco.
Why Agafay and Not Another Desert?
Morocco has several desert areas, but Agafay has an unbeatable advantage: its proximity to Marrakech. Where the Sahara (Merzouga or M'hamid) requires 7 to 10 hours of driving, Agafay is accessible in under an hour. It is the ideal option for travellers with limited time or those who do not want to devote two full days to travelling.
