It is the great debate for anyone planning a trip to Morocco: should you go to the Sahara or the Agafay Desert? Both have their charm, but they offer very different experiences. If you are torn between the two, this article is for you. We compare everything, point by point, to help you make the right choice.
Overview of the Two Deserts
The Agafay Desert is a stone desert located 30 km from Marrakech. No sand dunes here, but a lunar landscape of rocky hills, dry ravines and arid plains, with the High Atlas as a backdrop. It is an accessible, photogenic desert perfect for a day trip. To learn more, see our complete guide to the Agafay Desert.
The Moroccan Sahara (Merzouga/Erg Chebbi or M'hamid/Erg Chigaga) is the "real" sand desert, the one from postcards. Immense dunes reaching up to 150 metres high, a sea of sand as far as the eye can see. It is grandiose, but it is far away.
Distance and Travel Time from Marrakech
This is the criterion that often tips the scales:
Agafay:
โ Distance: 30 km
โ Travel time: 30 to 45 minutes
โ Accessible as a half-day or full-day trip
Sahara (Merzouga):
โ Distance: approximately 560 km
โ Travel time: 9 to 10 hours by road
โ Requires a minimum of 2 nights, ideally 3
Sahara (M'hamid/Erg Chigaga):
โ Distance: approximately 450 km
โ Travel time: 7 to 8 hours by road
โ Requires a minimum of 2 nights

Type of Landscape and Atmosphere
Agafay: lunar landscape, cracked earth, rocky hills, views of the snowy Atlas. The atmosphere is that of a western-style desert, raw and mineral. The sunset light is exceptional. It is not the golden sand of the Sahara, but it is spectacular in its own way.
Sahara: great dunes of orange sand, absolute silence, vastness as far as the eye can see. It is the classic desert image, the one that inspires dreams. Sunrise over the Merzouga dunes is an unforgettable moment.
Verdict: if you want sand dunes, it is the Sahara. If you want a spectacular mineral desert with mountains in the background, it is Agafay.
Available Activities
In Agafay, you can:
โ Go quad biking in the desert (2 hours of pure adrenaline)
โ Take a camel ride
โ Have dinner under the stars at a luxury camp
โ Sleep in a bivouac
โ Go buggy riding, mountain biking, hiking
โ Enjoy pools at upscale camps
In the Sahara, you can:
โ Go quad biking or buggy riding in the dunes
โ Take a multi-day camel trek
โ Sleep in a camp in the middle of the dunes
โ Go sandboarding
โ Stargaze (the sky is even purer than at Agafay)
Verdict: the activities are similar, but Agafay is more geared towards day trips while the Sahara invites multi-day contemplation.
Budget: How Much Does It Cost?
Agafay (day excursion):
โ 2-hour quad excursion with transfer: from 45 EUR
โ Quad + camel combo with transfer: from 55 EUR
โ Dinner + show: 30 to 80 EUR
โ Night in a luxury camp: 60 to 400 EUR
โ Total budget for a full day: 45 to 150 EUR
Sahara (excursion from Marrakech):
โ Organised tour 2 days/1 night: 100 to 200 EUR
โ Organised tour 3 days/2 nights: 150 to 350 EUR
โ Night in a luxury camp at Merzouga: 80 to 500 EUR
โ Minimum total budget: 150 to 350 EUR
Verdict: Agafay is significantly more affordable, especially when you include transport and accommodation.
So, Agafay or Sahara?
Choose Agafay if:
โ You have limited time (1 to 2 days in Marrakech)
โ You do not want to spend hours in the car
โ You are travelling with children or people who do not handle long journeys well
โ You want an accessible and affordable desert experience
โ You are based in Marrakech and want a day trip
Choose the Sahara if:
โ You have at least 3 days available
โ Sand dunes are on your bucket list
โ You want a total disconnection experience
โ You are on a road trip through Morocco
โ The journey is part of the adventure (the Dades Gorges and Valley of the Roses are on the route)
Our advice: if your stay allows it, do both! Start with Agafay for an introduction to the Moroccan desert, then head to the Sahara if you have time. But if you have to choose and you are in Marrakech for a short stay, Agafay is the obvious choice.
