What to Wear in the Agafay Desert

You've booked your trip to the Agafay Desert and you're wondering what to wear? It's an essential question, because the right outfit can make the difference between an unforgettable experience and a rough time. Between the sun, dust, wind and temperature changes, it's best to be well prepared. Here's our complete guide to the ideal outfit for the Agafay Desert, season by season.

The golden rule: closed shoes are mandatory

Let's start with the most important point. Whether you're doing quad biking, camel riding or simply visiting the desert, closed shoes are essential. For quad biking, it's even mandatory: no serious operator will let you ride in flip-flops, sandals or slides. Why? Because your feet are close to the engine and wheels, and the rocky terrain of the Agafay Desert is not made for bare feet.

What we recommend:

  • High-top trainers or lightweight hiking shoes — the ideal combo
  • Regular trainers work fine too, as long as they fully cover your feet
  • Avoid brand-new shoes: the sand and dust won't be kind to them

In summer (June to September): light but covered

Summer in the Agafay Desert is hot. Very hot. Temperatures can reach 38-42°C during the day. Paradoxically, you need to cover up — but smartly:

  • Lightweight long-sleeved top: a cotton or linen t-shirt protects better from the sun than a tank top. Sunburn on your arms at 100 km/h on a quad is not pleasant
  • Light trousers: thin cotton trousers or lightweight jeans. Avoid shorts, especially for quad biking (stone projections on your legs)
  • Light colours: white, beige, sand — they reflect the sun instead of absorbing it
  • Hat or cap: for moments off the quad (the helmet takes over during riding)

In winter (December to February): the layering system

In winter, the Agafay Desert holds some surprises. While it's mild during the day (18-22°C in the sun), temperatures drop significantly in the evening and morning, potentially down to 5-8°C. The secret is layering:

  • Base layer: a breathable long-sleeved t-shirt
  • Mid layer: a jumper or thin fleece
  • Outer layer: a windbreaker jacket, ideally waterproof. On the quad, the wind significantly lowers the perceived temperature
  • Trousers: classic jeans or cargo-style trousers work perfectly

If you're planning a desert dinner in the evening, add a scarf and personal gloves. Winter nights in the desert always catch people off guard.

In spring and autumn: the perfect balance

Spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) are the best seasons for quad biking in Agafay. Temperatures are ideal (22-30°C), but you should still plan a minimum:

  • T-shirt or light top for the daytime
  • Light jacket or sweatshirt for the return in the late afternoon — the temperature drops quickly after sunset
  • Trousers: always recommended over shorts for quad biking

This is the easiest season to dress for. No need to overpack, no risk of overheating.

Essential accessories

Beyond clothing, certain accessories make all the difference:

  • Sunglasses: even though protective goggles are provided for quad biking, you'll need them before and after the ride. The glare in the desert is intense
  • SPF 50 sunscreen: apply it 30 minutes before departure and bring the tube to reapply
  • Scarf or buff: wrap it around your neck and pull it up over your nose when it gets dusty. It's the most useful and most underrated accessory
  • Small backpack: to carry your jacket, water bottle and sunscreen

What NOT to wear

To avoid unpleasant surprises, here are the classic mistakes:

  • Flip-flops, sandals, heels: forbidden for quad biking, uncomfortable everywhere else
  • Long skirt or dress: risk of getting caught in the wheels or mechanics of the quad
  • Very loose clothing: it flaps in the wind on the quad and can hinder driving
  • Dangling jewellery: necklaces, large earrings... wind and vibrations don't mix well
  • Pristine white: if you treasure your favourite white clothes, leave them at the hotel. Desert dust is relentless
