You do not have to drive nine hours to sleep in the desert. The Agafay plateau is forty minutes from the medina, and a night there gives you the two things a day trip cannot: the plateau after every other group has gone home, and a sky with almost no light pollution in it.
What "Camp" Means Here
The word covers a very wide range. At one end are simple Berber bivouacs — canvas tents, shared bathrooms, mattresses on rugs, dinner around a fire. At the other are full luxury camps with heated pools, ensuite bathrooms, proper beds and private terraces. Prices differ by a factor of ten and so does the experience.

What an Evening Actually Looks Like
Most people arrive mid-to-late afternoon, which leaves time for an activity before dark — a quad ride or a camel ride — followed by sunset from a ridge. Dinner is served late by European standards, usually from eight: bread baked on site, salads, a tagine or a mechoui, mint tea. Many camps have Gnawa musicians.

Prices
A night in a simple bivouac with dinner and breakfast runs roughly 400-700 MAD per person. Mid-range camps sit around 900-1,500 MAD. The well-known luxury camps run from 2,000 MAD per person upwards, and considerably more in high season.

What to Bring
A warm layer, whatever the month. The plateau loses heat fast after dark and a 30°C afternoon can become a 12°C night; in winter it drops close to freezing. Who It Suits
Couples, obviously. But it also works better with children than people expect — the camps are enclosed, there is nothing to fall off, and children tend to find the whole thing far more exciting than a hotel. One Night or Two?
