The Agafay Desert sits barely 30 kilometres from Marrakech, which makes it the rare desert you can reach before your coffee gets cold. It is a stone desert rather than a sea of dunes — bare ochre hills, dry riverbeds and the High Atlas rising white behind them. The question we get asked most is simply: what is there actually to do out there? Quite a lot, as it turns out, and you can fit it into anything from two hours to a full weekend.
Quad Biking: the Signature Agafay Experience
If you do one thing in Agafay, make it this. The terrain here is close to ideal for quad biking: firm tracks, rolling hills and long sight lines, without the soft dunes that punish beginners in the Sahara. A standard ride lasts two hours and covers the plateau above the Lalla Takerkoust reservoir.

Camel Rides: the Slow Way to See the Desert
A camel ride is the opposite experience, and it is worth doing precisely for that reason. At walking pace you notice things the quad blurs past: the argan scrub, the dry wadis, the shepherd tracks that have crossed this plateau for centuries. Rides typically run 45 minutes to an hour, and the animals are handled by local camel men who have worked these routes their whole lives.

Buggy, Mountain Bike and Hiking
Quads are not the only way to cover ground. A buggy seats two side by side and suits people who would rather share the drive than ride solo — it is also the better choice if you want to talk to each other. Sunset, Stars and Dinner in the Desert
Agafay's real trick is what happens after five o'clock. The low sun turns the grey stone a deep amber, the Atlas goes pink, and the whole plateau empties out. Sunset rides are our most requested departure for good reason — here is what to expect.
Stay a little longer and you get dinner. Most camps serve a proper Moroccan meal — tagine, bread baked on site, mint tea — at long tables under the open sky, usually with Gnawa musicians. A half day (roughly 4 hours door to door) is enough for a quad ride plus a mint tea stop. A full day lets you combine quad and camel, eat lunch at a camp and stay for sunset — see our full-day itinerary.
